Alas, I graduated at the top of my class, was the co-captain of the track team, won several awards in theatre and student government, and went on to college, graduate school, and a lucrative and successful career.
But my mother pointed out that I was 5th in my class while my brother was 2nd, on many occasions said "at your track meets you just run in the same circle," and frequently dismissed my career ambitions, especially when I bought my first computer (I now work in technical writing in cybersecurity - Medium is a fun side gig).
So let me know if you "get it" now.
Vapid? Not so much.
