And Just Like That…I’m As Deeply Invested As I Was 24 Years Ago
And I’m Not The Least Bit Ashamed
I was just a bit older than the target demographic for “Sex and the City,” but I was a devotee. And I mean hardcore. From the moment Sarah Jessica Parker and her amazing gal pals hit the screen in 1998, I was smitten. It was partly because I’d been a fan of SJP’s all the way back to Square Pegs, when Parker and Amy Linker were two teens struggling to fit in at Weemawee High School. My own high school trajectory had me placed neatly between Parker’s character, Patty, and the brusque antagonist Muffy Tepperman. Besides, we all knew that eventually Parker’s character would win the day. And we knew the same of her character, Carrie Bradshaw, in Sex and the City.
I was drawn into SATC even more easily perhaps, because I am a writer, like Carrie, and to put some frosting on that cupcake, in 1998 I owned roughly 320 pairs of shoes. While I wasn’t a Manolo girl in the Bradshaw tradition, I did have some pretty pricey pairs, and many with a Carrie-worthy flair. I had been amassing shoes since high school and rarely let go of a pair unless there was a truly compelling reason. I was a thrifty shoe shopper, but had occasional splurges when the right paw-decoration came my way.
I’d never tout myself as being the fashion maven Carrie was, or is, but I did very much…
