It’s an Extrovert’s Dream Side Gig

The photo above is not my actual Air BnB space, but it would make for a good one. I’d stay in that room, wouldn’t you?

When a friend first suggested I turn part of my home into a short-term rental, I vehemently said, “no!” The idea of allowing total strangers to come and go in my personal space was, well…weird.

I do have a house that has an entire basement space with a bedroom and bathroom. When I first moved into the house, it was all set up for my oldest son, who lived here thanks to Covid, with an armoire, entertainment center, desk, double bed — the works. It’s a great space. Not at all your typical basement, I must say.

But when my son moved out on his own, it still didn’t strike me as a place to offer respite to strangers. There’s no separate entrance, for one thing. Anyone staying there must first come in the front door and walk through the living room.

But the friend who suggested hosting had a similar situation. She had done the same thing at her house, but went so far as to host in the second bedroom in her home, on the same floor where she and her partner had the main bedroom. The more she talked about it, the more I became intrigued.
