GPT’s Growth Spurt Will Sputter

Large Language Models like Chat GPT have caused a stir just about everywhere. Some are crying “Foul!” Some are running out of the room, panicked that their jobs will be replaced. Some are shouting praises from the rooftops.

All of the panic and excitement?

Pretty much ho-hum already.

Not long ago, Open AI launched their big updgrade to their LLM, named Chat GPT4. It was so explosive that tech bigwigs all over the place called for a moratorium on research and experimentation in areas that could be (or already are) larger than OpenAI’s current model. The hysteria was kind of funny to me.

Like an ever-expanding universe, what lies off in the distance — the really really far distance — is of no use to me, or to you, or to any of us. It’s simply TOO far. Growing a Large Language Model to the borders of all language is the same thing. Too big to matter.

Turns out, Sam Altman agrees. Some people would think that a guy like Altman would have so much skin in the game that growing OpenAI to its absolute limit would be his prime goal. Except it’s not.

At MIT, Altman recently said, “I think we’re at the end of the era where it’s going to be these, like, giant, giant models. We’ll make them better in other ways.” Those other ways are what actually fascinate me, and loads of…
