I Lost My Job, But I’m Doing Way Better Now Than I Was When I Earned 6 Figures

Here’s Why

In late February, eleven colleagues and I found ourselves invited to a meeting simply labeled “2020 Forecasting.” An innocuous title if ever there was one. It was scheduled for 9:45 AM, and since we were nearing the halfway mark of the first quarter, it didn’t register with me. Our midsize company had a lot going on. I’d been there just over half a year, joining to smooth out the rough edges of an internal communications plan.

As a mid-level executive, my days were filled with these kinds of meetings. Not a lot of notice, not a lot of detail.

I brought only my cell phone. I could text my admin to bring my laptop if necessary, but usually someone would send meeting minutes shortly afterwards. Besides, I was coming directly from another meeting.

I didn’t know that for the eleven of us it would be the very last meeting we’d ever attend as employees.

Yeah. It was that meeting.

Here I am, a couple of months later, in the heavy thickness of the COVID-19 disaster (it is definitely a disaster), and although the world is in chaos, I can say I am doing much, much better than I was when I had that 9-to-5 Monday-through Friday job.
