Emma Thompson just splashed us all with a giant load of sex, something we were sorely missing, until the release of “Good Luck to You, Leo Grande.” It was far, far past time!
For those who haven’t seen it, either don’t read this or prepare for some spoilers. Sorry, folks.
Thompson plays a widowed woman with adult children. She still looks great, by all measures of women who have adult children. As it turns out, her marital sex life was less than fantastic. Not an unusual situation for many women “of a certain age.” One difference between Thomas and many women even in their fifties and sixties is that she only had one sexual partner, her husband, and therefore lacks some of the3 experiences she might otherwise have enjoyed. It’s because of this that she hires Leo, a super sexy escort, to help her move past her former pallid sex life and into a phase of (limited) liberation.
I won’t list the timeline and events here, but part of the joy of this movie is that her character does indeed begin to view sex as fun, and flirty, and caring, and intimate rather than perfunctory. It’s refreshing. It’s especially lovely because there is a persisting notion that women over fifty lose a lot of interest or drive. That false narrative has been circulating for-evah. Sure, there are physical changes, but there is also the very liberating notion that we can’t get knocked up, we don’t have to report to kids and soccer and whatever other trials there are on our time, and we…
