Signs You’ve Got a Toxic Boss

According to Harvard Business School, workplaces with a toxic boss end up with:

25% of employees taking their frustrations out on clients and customers

48% intentionally decreasing their work effort and intentionally spending less time at work

78% saying their commitment to their organization declined

66% acknowledging that their performance declined

Over time, toxic bosses degrade employee confidence, and can even cause overall mental health to deteriorate. Employees often rely on their PTO to salvage their sanity until they’re able to move on, which costs the company not just money, but institutional knowledge and time.

More than half of all employees (57%) quit thanks to toxic bosses. Unfortunately many employees stay because to leave results in a potential employment gap, the stigma of “job hopping,” or the risk of a reduction in salary. Additionally some employees must stay because of tuition reimbursement agreements or non-disclosures that tether them to their current employers.

Many times, a toxic boss is responsible for setting an employee up for failure by being unwilling or unable to give clear direction and feedback. This happens all too often when the employee-boss relationship is strained. Additionally, bosses in those…
