I probably should have clarified in the essay that my staying at home was when our kids were toddlers, and we both agreed that daycare was more expensive than the money I would make, so I went to work full-time when our youngest (of 3) was 4 years old. I now worked part-time, and often evening and weekend jobs in-between.
