Why Do We Care About Ukraine?

It’s in the news everywhere, yet it’s also likely that few Americans could point to it on a map.

You can’t listen to NPR, CNN, or any other newscast without hearing “Ukraine,” Russia,” Putin.” But how may of us actually understand why we, over here across the Atlantic, should be legitimately concerned about Russia’s imminent plan to invade?

I mean, sure, those of us with a conscience of course feel empathy when the thought that soldiers, and especially civilians, could be put in harm’s way.

And of course we are tired, as Americans, of the thought of endless war.

But this time, Biden has promised that we will not send troops into a conflict that isn’t ours. He has promised that we will only maintain presence in the surrounding NATO countries. We are not going where we don’t belong. If we believe that, then we believe that we are not entering into another armed conflict.

If we believe that, then we should believe that this whole conflict won’t impact us too much this time, right?

Right?

Well…

On Sunday night, I went to see the Best Picture nominee Licorice Pizza.
