You Thought Feminism Was Dead, But Here Is Some of the Amazing Stuff We Did in the Past Decade

Ladies, I know. It gets tiring. We’ve been called “Feminazis” by some, because we are too outspoken about what we want and need from the world. Others think that since 2000-ish, women have gotten lazy about their feminism, and are riding on the coattails of the women who came before us. I think there’s plenty of evidence that we’re doing just fine.

Let’s take a quick look at the past decade, since that’s what we love to do as a decade winds down. It’s time for a pat on the back to energize our way into the (I am Woman, hear me) Roaring 20’s:

By 2011, Oprah launched her cable network, OWN, and we can all agree that woman-powerhouse Oprah made room for all things feminine and feminist on that channel. Never before had a media powerhouse been both female and black, so I think we started out fine. In keeping, Beyonce released “Run the World (Girls),” which even Michelle Obama included on her summer hits playlist. We got to see a breakthrough hit in “Bridesmaids,” proving to the world that the boys’ club doesn’t own all of the raunchy, party-all-weekend movies, after all.

Along comes 2012, and M.I.A. gives us that glorious anthem, “Bad Girls,” showing the world that even from afar, we could unite with Saudi women in their effort to gain the…
